Hello everyone! I’m Brandon Emerick, CEO of BlissGene Therapeutics. I have assembled a team of 6 PhD scientists and an MBA marketer to eliminate human suffering as much as possible. Our story begins with a Scottish woman who has remarkable mutations on 2 genes. They enable her to not perceive any pain, anxiety, or low mood whatsoever in her 76-year life. She has had broken bones, burns, a hip displacement, and even surgery without ever needing anesthesia or pain med. Our goal is to mimic her condition in people who suffer from anxiety, depression, and chronic pain.
The genes involved in this woman’s condition are called FAAH and FAAH-OUT. FAAH stands for fatty acid amide hydrolase. It is responsible for breaking down endocannabinoids like anandamide. Ananda means bliss; hence anandamide is responsible for euphoric feelings. THC actually looks identical to anandamide to the body, which explains its effects. In her case, she has low levels of FAAH, meaning that endocannabinoids like anandamide aren’t broken down. Thus, she has more than twice the normal level of anandamide in her system. Unlike FAAH, the FAAH-OUT gene is a new area of research we will be contributing to. What we know now is that this woman’s low expression of FAAH-OUT amplifies the buildup of blissful neurotransmitters.
Already we have an experimental plan made for how we can influence the FAAH-OUT gene in cell cultures. We just need someone who has access to a cell lab and preferably funding to move forward with research.
It has been suggested by others to mimic this woman’s condition, but our plan is totally unprecedented because it relies on temporary gene therapy. That way, our patients will see whether or not they like the treatment before moving forward with CRISPR which is permanent.
We have extremely qualified people for the job. My degree includes cognitive science and business administration. Our COO has both a Doctor of Pharmacy and a PhD in Bioengineering. We also have a Yale researcher who has already done gene therapy for the brain. Plus, we have an MIT graduate who has experience in biotech startups.
With just a few minor changes to our genome, we can become a pain-free and happy species.
