REASONS: I worked with an NGO in Alabama and this story changed my life. There was a family passing through, returning from Disney. Near Birmingham, they had a devastating car accident in which the father died, the mother was in a coma and the two young children were in temporary custody of the highway patrol. Child protective services went to great lengths to identify next of kin to avoid the children being place in foster care. They successfully identified the children’s grandmother in Montana. She was informed of the circumstances, yet refused to come and get the children. This should have been the happiest road trip of their lives. Now, the children have lost their entire family, and don’t understand what’s going on. I believe this family would never have wanted this for their children. They had a relative, god-parent, or friend whom they would have entrusted with their children. Without a Health Care Directive, their wishes were never known.
The average American age 20-50 doesn’t have a Health Care Directive or Last Will & Testament in place. They believe that this is something for old people, requires a visit to a law office, is expensive and the documents that they get aren’t flexible to keep up with their changing lives. While they may receive benefits such as health and term life insurance from their employer, there isn’t legal documentation to support their wishes in case anything actually goes wrong. They often hope the emergency contacts in their phone or giving a friend their email password means everything will be taken care of.
Hoping your family, doctor or the legal system will carry out your wishes without a plan is a recipe for disaster Instead of spending their time with you, your loved ones are arguing on what course of care you prefer. Kingfisher Files provides a solution in the palm of your hand with a cellphone or internet connected laptop. In a few minutes, a document is created, notarized, stored and shared. Got married? Had a child? Adopted a pet? Changed your wishes? Update your documents from your cellphone, tablet or pc. It’s that easy.
Kingfisher Files: Not just a piece of paper, peace of mind.
