Sowell & Company is a privately held investment company founded in 1972 by Jim Sowell, based in Dallas, Texas. Now in its fifth decade, the firm invests its own capital exclusively and does not utilize outside investors or a fund. Sowell began as a custom home builder in Arlington, Texas, funded by a $1,500 loan from Jim Sowell's father's life insurance policy, before transitioning into land development, transacting on more than 400 properties across Texas. The firm's focus spans three pillars: real estate, oil and gas, and private investment in operating companies. Its oil and gas portfolio includes Alpine Gas and Titan Rock, while it has served as principal owner of more than 20 operating companies over the years, several of which have gone public. Sowell's investment approach centers on identifying and quickly capitalizing on opportunities unrecognized or underappreciated by its peers, leveraging its extensive expertise, resources, and relationships to act decisively across real estate, energy, and diverse operating businesses.
