Our success is dependent on delivering returns for our investors. At the same time, we work with our entrepreneurs to structure investment transactions that ensure a true alignment of financial incentives and a fair sharing of risks and rewards. We expect to be actively involved with our portfolio companies. The path to success for our investors, our entrepreneurs, and ourselves is by building great companies that create and sustain lasting value. We know that company building is hard work, and we believe that entrepreneurs should expect us to provide much more than just investment capital. With over 200 years of combined investment and operating experience, we are consistently able to add value in the following areas: Strategy formulation Creation of strategic partnerships with market partners, customers, and suppliers Operational expertise Recruiting of key executives and board members Structuring and execution of additional financings Engineering and execution of exits Board member, often as outside chairman We want to own a meaningful position in our companies. Since we put a substantial amount of time and effort into each investment, we want to make sure that we participate meaningfully in its success. We typically seek ownership positions in the range of 20-50%, and we are the lead investor in the majority of our deals. We are persistent. Almost every investment encounters bumps and hurdles along the way. Instead of simply wiping our hands and walking away, our strong bias is to continue to support good companies and good management teams as they work to overcome their difficulties. Some of our best investments have been companies that went through bleak periods only to subsequently emerge as real winners later on. We believe that good entrepreneurs usually find a way through obstacles if given the right kind of support.
