We need systems change now more than ever. Climate change and growing economic inequality are at crisis points that require urgent action. We look to natural systems for inspiration in designing durable solutions. Nature works as a web of interconnected systems. Our economy, on the other hand, has developed to drive to a single output: profitability to shareholders. It’s easy to manage a single variable, and it requires hard work, patience, and a new process to design for many variables. But that’s what we believe to be the very thing we need to do to deal with the complexity of the converging challenges of climate crisis and escalating economic inequality. Systems thinking demands that we think through the complexity of human and natural systems, search for and solve for root causes instead of addressing symptoms, and think about holistic solutions.
