About Gradient Ventures

Gradient has been investing at the forefront of artificial intelligence since 2017. Based in San Francisco and originally launched as Google's AI-focused fund, it's led by former founders, technical experts, and domain specialists who have supported hundreds of AI founders from the beginning. Beyond capital, Gradient takes a hands-on, founder-centric approach, working side-by-side through challenges and triumphs. Its due diligence increasingly relies on the team's own engineering skills to directly test whether founders' products actually work, rather than relying solely on pitch materials. The firm focuses exclusively on seed and pre-seed AI companies, deliberately avoiding foundational model contenders and outsized mega-seed rounds. Notable investments include Writer, Lambda, Oura, Sona, Krea, and Airspace Intelligence, with exits including CentML (acquired by Nvidia), Prepared (acquired by Axon), and Streamlit (acquired by Snowflake for a reported $700–800 million). Gradient recently closed its fifth fund at $220 million, taking on outside LPs for the first time while Google remains a notable backer. Its criteria favor disruptive, industry-redefining AI ideas backed by real technical substance over hype or capital size.
