Clean Energy Ventures is a venture capital firm focused on investing in companies commercializing disruptive advanced energy technologies and business model innovations that can achieve significant scale by taking advantage of market-driven forces to address global climate disruption. The firms’ principals have been investing in, supporting and mentoring early-stage clean energy startups together since 2005, and work with a deep bench of Venture Partners who, together with the Principals, represent more than 300 years of combined clean energy operating and investing experience. Our managing partners have been investing in climate since the early 2000s, when they founded an investment cohort of energy industry executives and entrepreneurs dedicated to clean energy — bringing together operators, engineers, and investors around a single idea: that climate solutions demand the same discipline as any other fundamental business or technology challenge. In 2017, that conviction became Clean Energy Ventures. Today, we manage over $400 million across two funds, backing companies built on proven science with clear paths to commercialization. What We Look For ▪ Gigaton-scale climate impact The technology must have a credible, quantified path to multi-gigaton scale CO₂ emissions reduction within 30 years. ▪ Disruptive technology advantage We back technologies with a defensible, proprietary edge. A leap forward in price, speed, or performance improvements with at least 7 years of sustainable competitive advantage and no science risk. ▪ Large and growing addressable market The target market must be large enough to support a category-leading business, ideally in a sector undergoing generational transformation driven by decarbonization pressure and market revolution. ▪ Strong founding team We invest in founders who combine deep technical expertise with the grit, coachability, and commercial instinct needed to navigate the long road from prototype to market leadership.
