Brownfields Revitalization Fund – State Program

About Brownfields Revitalization Fund – State Program

Vermont took a significant step towards brownfield cleanup in 2021 with a $25 million investment, marking the state's largest contribution to this cause. The funds were split between the Agency of Natural Resources and the Agency of Commerce and Community Development. Notably, the latter agency received $11 million, which they distributed in two ways: $1 million went to regional planning commissions for site assessments, while the remaining $10 million funded cleanup grants for contaminated properties enrolled in a specific program. These grants, unlike previous limitations, can be used for any amount, fostering projects that support business development, housing, and mixed-use spaces. Recognizing the program's success, an additional $6 million was allocated in 2022, further solidifying Vermont's commitment to brownfield revitalization and its potential for economic growth. This initiative marks a shift from relying solely on federal funding and empowers the state to actively shape its future by cleaning up contaminated sites and promoting their productive reuse.
