We are building a consumer carbon footprint tracking app.
According to The Nature Conservancy, the average carbon footprint per person per year in the United States is 16 tons of carbon emissions. Vastly greater than the global average of 4 tons per person per year. To avoid a 1.5-degree Celsius rise in global temperatures, the average global footprint per person per year would need to drop to 2 tons per person per year.
Based on a study published in Environment International, household consumption directly accounts for 20% of GHG emissions in the United States; and indirectly accounts for 80% of GHG emissions. An app providing transparency into user carbon emissions could have a powerful impact on reducing overall GHG emissions.
Our app serves to monitor a user’s carbon footprint over time. Always referencing the annual carbon emissions or the yearly carbon footprint.
Problem:
- “I would like to reduce my carbon footprint. Now what?”
- Current carbon footprint apps and calculators on the market today:
- Require heavy user data entry. They operate more like a fitness app with daily logging of food and water intake, and weekly weigh-ins.
- Focused on offsetting the user’s carbon footprint with carbon projects (often in other countries) rather than supporting the user in reducing their own carbon footprint.
- Incorporate many features and data integrations that may not have much impact on total carbon footprint calculation.
Solution:
· An app that answers the following questions: What is my current carbon footprint? What is my target carbon footprint? What steps can I take to get there?
· An app that tracks the user’s carbon footprint based on annual carbon emissions.
· An app with the right data integrations, focused on areas with the largest carbon emissions such as fuel and home energy consumption.
· An app that operates like CreditKarma, monitoring the user’s carbon footprint with light user data entry.
Business Model:
· Virida is a B2C Saas company.
· Large global target market.
Roadmap:
· The initial funds will be used to build a basic app as proof-of-concept to communicate the vision to internal and external stakeholders and validate the main ideas of the application.
· Next, we will build a small software development team and small product team to work on the first version while defining our go-to-market strategy.
· The initial proof-of-concept will already be available to users and supported by a remote development team as we transition to in-house software engineers.
· The full process should take 18 months.
