Nonprofit melanoma outreach organization and racing team taking melanoma awareness and early detection techniques to the Motorsports community. Proven track record of collaboration with local dermatologists to offer free skin checks. 8 potential melanoma skin cancers and 16 non-melanoma skin cancers identified since June 2023.
Team Truck Melanoma was founded on the principle that no one needs to die from melanoma, and everyone needs to hear about melanoma and what to look for on their own skin in order to detect concerning lesions early.
Melanoma is the most deadly form of skin cancer, but, when caught early it has an over 95% survival rate at 5 years out. The key is early detection.
By meeting individuals where they are at, TTM has the unique opportunity to reach individuals that may otherwise not be served by the traditional medical model. A lot of individuals in the Motorsports community live in rural areas and do not have easy access to dermatological care. A lot of the individuals are younger and may not yet be thinking about skin health. What we have found that by meeting these individuals on a shared plane, at the racetrack, at a car show, or a motorsports venders expo we position ourselves as relatable and on equal playing fields where conversations are fostered, and we can more easily reach the individuals.
We are also in the process of building a race truck. A 1996 Chevrolet S10, short-bed pickup, originally started as a $500 24 Hours of Lemons vehicle has become a talking point that accompanies us to outreach events and helps to draw people in and open up conversations. We are Motorsports enthusiasts as well as healthcare professionals, so we can relate with our audience.
My ultimate goal for Team Truck Melanoma is to have an outreach that helps to bridge the gaps that exist in dermatological care, aid in the triage of patients that need to be seen by providers urgently and to help demystify melanoma.
We want to be able to have our outreach in all aspects of Motorsports, from motocross to rack crawling, and everything in between. In order to do this we need to be able to afford the fees that come with having booth space at events, pay for the travel costs to events, and to support a small staff that can help organize the volunteers. We are also in need of the operating funds to allow us to maintain a website as well as cover consulting fees to help us better understand prospecting and obtaining sponsorship funds to allow us to continue to grow and remain viable.
We are seeking $150,000 in seed/grant money or angel investor to allow us to continue to build. Our proof of concept is done. We aim to expand to a national melanoma outreach organization in the next year!
