I'm Lupita Aguilera Hicks, the founder of SONORA based in Gilbert, Arizona. Thank you for letting me borrow some of your time to share the SONORA story.
At SONORA, our mission was born from love, loss, and the deep bond of family. As a Native American born in Mexico, I have personally witnessed the harsh reality of diabetes within my own family. I lost my grandmother to this disease, watched my mother face its devastating consequences—losing a limb and suffering heart complications—and I was diagnosed with prediabetes. I do not want to see it continue with me.
In our community, diabetes is not just common; tragically, it threatens Latinos and Native Americans at twice the rate of other groups. This is not just a statistic: it’s a health crisis, endangering our families, our culture, and our future.
Determined to help my mother and break this cycle in my own life, I adopted a ketogenic lifestyle. However, I soon realized there was a lack of healthy, culturally inspired foods suitable for this way of eating. That’s how SONORA was born: to offer delicious and authentic options that connect us to our roots while supporting our health.
But SONORA is not just for our community; it’s for all families facing diabetes, obesity, or striving to prevent them. It’s a welcome invitation to share our table and traditions while taking care of our health together.
SONORA consists of myself and my husband, Mike. My background is in Sourcing and Procurement, while Mike comes with a background as a Director of Product Engineering. We have tried to keep ourselves lean by contracting any needed services. That said, our products are manufactured at a SQF-certified copacker in Arlington, TX.
Our strategy was to first launch online via our website and Amazon store, testing pricing and what sells best there first. After two years of testing and dialing in the product and packaging, we now want to pursue the brick and mortar grocer channel. To that extent, we have contracted a retail sales consultant and are now preparing for the eventual need to ramp up.
Our customers are a blend of people on keto/low carb diets and diabetics looking for tasty foods with low glycemic impact. Currently we're the only company in the keto foods market focused on the 20% of the country coming from a Latino foods heritage.
