Somebody's Grandmother Incorporated is a nonprofit foundation established to motivate, educate, engage, enrich, and empower young people to be able to successfully navigate Life as we know it. Young people need guidance and encouragement as they learn what it means to respect others as well as themselves. Rather than taking a remedial course of action after young people have become involved with the juvenile justice system or have just dropped out of school, dropped out of economic processes, and dropped out of Life. Instead of throwing up our hands in despair, Somebody's Grandmother proposes to embrace these young people and, in conjunction with schools, social services agencies, and other people concerned with the outcome for them, help them to discover a better way of life. Instead of feeding them negativity, let us encourage and uplift as many young people as possible so we won't lose them to the streets. When young people are given the responsibility of caring for some one or some thing other than themselves, it is amazing how they will step up to the plate to make themselves visible.

One of the ways to fund our efforts includes making and distributing hand pies made from dried peaches. We have secured a commercial kitchen in which to make our product with a view to selling the pies at specific restaurants and markets. Using a long-established barbecue restaurant to test our product, we received comments that we have an “excellent,” “delicious,” and “beautiful” product. Based on that critique, as Executive Director of this organization I studied for and received Food Manager certification. As required by law, we have investigated and are securing equipment so we can label our product to sell them in grocery stores and other outlets.
With a solid foundation and through promoting our website once it is fully operational, we expect to accomplish the mission we are embarking upon. Although we would hope to reach each and every young person with whom we come in contact, we are also realists and recognize this is not possible. For those we do reach, however, we do expect an excellent outcome; one which, hopefully, will affect young people and their families for generations to come.
As Founder and Executive Director of Somebody’s Grandmother, I hold a masters degree in educational studies from McKendree University and a masters degree in theological studies from Eden Theological Seminary. I use those qualifications along with my passion for helping and encouraging young people to maximize their abilities to live their best life to carry out the purpose for which this organization was established. I do not propose to risk failure by trying to accomplish the mission of Somebody’s Grandmother by myself. Therefore, the “village” of resources and advisors I have assembled includes retired educators, social work professionals, and other individuals who are skilled in what they do, are passionate, focused and goal-oriented, and who have a strong work ethic.
A favorite saying in my family passed down from my own grandmother is, “Brighten the corner where you are.” Here at Somebody’s Grandmother we endeavor to do just that and to influence young people to adopt the same attitude for the betterment of our community and the world.
