Seniors take up about 13% of the population, meaning there are around 42million seniors living in America today. The government alone spends on average $26,000 per year per elderly person, even those 35% of seniors cash in on long term care insurance or private health/retirement plans. The generations of today are not investing in their long term care, they aren’t thinking about living in a home, they certainly aren’t thinking about growing old. But when they do, which they will – Sheps Haven will have the socially accepted care alternative they never knew they needed.
By 2030 seniors are expected to take up over 20% of the population according to the US Census Bureau. That percentage remains the same by 2050 however, given how many people are projected to be living the US by that time, it is expected that more than 80million seniors will be waiting to be served. Researchers project that more than 76 million babies were born during the baby boomer generation, meaning its reasonable to believe that more than 40 million people in the US will cross the ’senior’ threshold in the next twelve years. With this amount of seniors in the country at one time, the government is projected to spend a lot more money on programs like Medicare and medicated. By 2027 those expenditures from the government are meant to have doubled from the figures spent in 2016 coming out at around $1.16 trillion on Medicare alone. With this projection in mind, senior living solutions need to be developed quickly. Its been reported that the US will need almost two million more housing facilities by 2040 to provide living space for seniors who need care, but what if Sheps Haven creates an alternative to this, allowing more seniors to age in place, with day programs such as ours.
