Rice is the most important single item for Sierra Leoneans. An astounding 83.3% of ALL food imports to Sierra Leone is rice! In fact 15% of ALL imports into Sierra Leone is Rice! The next highest import is cars at 3% and cement at 2%. All other imports are 1% or below. I lived in Sierra Leone for over a decade and on average they eat rice 5.7 days per week. The annual per person consumption rate of rice is 104kg. On average, 42% of all caloric intake is from rice. Government employees and often employees in general are paid, as part of their salary, a 50kg bag of rice per month. In India and Thailand we have relationships with Rice Mills, and traders able to supply high quality Rice.
We have done business with the governemt to supply Communication Equipment (submersible, portable handsets; mobile units for vehicles or as base stations; repeater/duplexers placed on mountaintops or rooftop or a mobile variety capable for use in the most remote locations. This business came about due to my over two decades experience running two security companies in West Africa (including Sierra Leone). I have expertise and experience using this equipment in that particular clime. Because of this business, which is expanding from Sierra Leone Police (SLP) to Head of State security, Military, and Fire Departments, we are in talks to provide Rice as well (up to 65,000 50kg bags per month) to government agencies such as Correctional Institutions, SLP, Military etc.
After college, I went from bank clerk to bank Manager in 6 months, running an accounting division of custodial accountants for 100 mutual funds at Shawmut Bank. I was recruited and became a research analyst at Drexel Burnham Lambert on Wall St. I branched off on my own and became a portfolio manager before my permanent move to running a development company, a security company and a charitble organization in West Africa. I stopped doing this work to take care of my elderly mother for several years before she passed last year. Now I have restarted this new business in Sierra Leone.
