Pill + Plant

Raising $200 to build a drug-herb interaction search app for consumers.

Creating a user-friendly app for drug-herb interactions that is a reliable educational tool for consumers.

Founder Alexandra Sienkiewicz was inspired to create an app of this kind after founding a popular social gathering place in NYC that offered mocktails made from plants consumed as alternatives to alcohol and prescription drugs.  Many individuals are taking all kinds of pills and plants to help or cope with some aspect of their physical and mental well-being without fully understanding the implications. In this endeavor, Alexandra became passionate about educating and gained a better understanding through a certification program for Plant-Medicine with Cornell University.  Fundamentally, there's a lack of transparency in the supplement and nutraceutical industries. With the influx of all kinds of alternative products into the market, there is an opportunity for resources and tools with reliable data to be accessible to the public. Everything is made of chemicals, some of which are necessary, vital chemicals, and others may be toxic. A lack of knowledge about the action mechanisms of chemical compounds or mixtures increases concerns regarding the safety of dietary ingredients, supplements, and OTC or RX interactions. There is no complete and comprehensive database for plants and modern allopathic drugs; existing databases are limited and primarily targeted to be understood by persons with a background in medicine and science.

An app like this simply doesn't exist yet, and it needs to!

Introducing...

PILL + PLANT:   The app will cross-search drugs, herbs, supplements, and food to extract information and display obtained researched evidence. It will focus on interactions, potential contraindications, and safety concerns.

  • Problem: Consumers lack knowledge and understanding of drug, supplement, and food chemical interactions. DDI and HDI data are layered/buried in natural language texts, such as abstracts, journal papers, books, and drug evaluation reports. Only well-trained researchers with a medical background can interpret the content.
  • Solution: The Pill + Plant app will allow users to search substances, understand their mechanisms of action in the primary compounds, and receive information on potential contraindications and safety concerns.
  • Target audience: All consumers focusing on health and well-being, holistic medicine, and underlying medical conditions.
  • Objective: Well-informed consumers can make better decisions about their health and personalize their care programs. This app is a tool that will raise awareness of potential effects and help improve a dialogue about an individual’s health care with their medical care providers.
