After 30 years, New Horizons School (NHS) was re-established on July 1, 2019. NHS seeks to provide students in Jr. Kindergarten – 8th grade with a quality education and a solid foundation to triumph in the future. We believe all students can be successful with the proper engagement and encouragement. New Horizons School strives to create a dynamic and interactive learning environment that will:
• Allow for individual differences and learning styles using hands-on learning, technology, music, visual, and performing arts as tools for learning
• Partner with students, parents, and the community for each child to reach their full potential.
• Strive for students to develop a sense of confidence, compassion, and commitment to education while using life skills and leadership opportunities.
Students We Service
New Horizons School seeks to educate students that reflect the social and economic diversity of its community. The student populations that NHS serves are residents primarily in the Union City, Newark, and Fremont communities. Many of the working parents commuting from other areas benefit from our 12-hour-a-day schedule and 12-month calendar. There is no need for parents to locate another program after Kindergarten because New Horizons School extends to 8th grade. New Horizons School opens its doors to students for morning and after-school care. We will serve our working parents with student programs such as homework help and extracurricular activities such as chess clubs, sports, drama, and science, as extended academic clubs. Our program is based on the educational needs of the following student profile:
● Students whose needs call for a small structured learning environment with personalized attention.
● Students whose academic needs are not being met in a traditional large school. ● Students who will benefit from an accelerated curriculum.
● Students who want to overachieve in core academic subjects.
● Students who are in need of after-school care and tutoring services. ● Students who will miss the age requirement for kindergarten.
● Students who desire after-school care, tutoring, and extracurricular activities.
The Market
We define our market with Jr. Kindergarten (age 4) through grade 8 (age 14) students during the 2019-20 school year. Our total market was approximately 23% of the total population in the city of Fremont. Out of 1,088 nursery and preschool students looking to enroll in school for the 2019-2020 school year, we sought to reach .02% or more of the population. Out of the 794 Kindergarten age students, we sought to reach .03% or more of the population. There were approximately 8,952 students between the ages of 5 to 14, our target age for the 2019-20 school year. The population of students increased in 2023 by 25% due to new housing and job opportunities.
Competition
We compete directly with schools that offer academic programs and daycare to preschool and kindergarten-age students. Alternatives to our services include tutoring and after-school programs.
Our program is unique because:
● We will use song, dance, or drama in almost every part of the children’s day when teaching the state standards.
● We will offer a 2-month summer program with STEM learning, along with dance, music, art, drama, and fitness.
● We will use a unique educational system called Workshop Way®, which recognizes learning differences among students and uses multiple teaching styles while allowing students to progress at their own pace. Reading and math lessons are individualized. Phonics and critical thinking will be incorporated into the curriculum.
● Our program will also focus on STEM education, preparing students for the demands of the workforce in the future through interactive, hands-on learning in science, technology, engineering, and math.
● As part of the full-range curriculum, our students will be provided with Spanish lessons, physical education, and computer time.
● Class sizes will be small and our degreed teachers will be fully trained to incorporate our special teaching methods.
● New Horizons School will service students in its community and provide tuition assistance through flexible plans.
Risk/Opportunity
The greatest risk to our business can be the increase of preschools and childcare in the community. We feel we can overcome these risks because of our focused philosophy, small class sizes, student academic outcomes, and daycare hours for working parents. The greatest opportunity that we face involves the newly implemented age requirement. Students must be 5 years old by September 1st in order to qualify for a public kindergarten classroom. However, due to our private school status, we are not mandated with this age requirement.
