Canada’s wildland-urban interface (WUI) faces escalating wildfire threats due to climate change, expanding development, and longer fire seasons. Recent years have seen catastrophic losses of homes, infrastructure, and communities, with disproportionate impacts on rural, remote, and Indigenous territories.
The Taskforce will protect at-risk communities through specialized WUI firefighting, structure protection, and integrated emergency management.
Key Deliverables
- Up to 50 specialized wildland/WUI fire trucks and support vehicles
- 10 portable sprinkler trailers for structure protection
- Capacity for up to 200 trained firefighters (including significant Indigenous recruitment and training)
- Full logistics package: mobile camps, fueling systems, and command infrastructure
The Taskforce will be available for deployment across Canada to supplement provincial/territorial resources during high-risk periods or major incidents.
The Taskforce will function as a scalable, modular asset that can deploy in whole or in part to high-risk areas. It will focus on:
- Rapid structure protection and WUI tactics (defensible space, gel/foam application, point protection)
- Wildland fire suppression in interface zones
- Community evacuation support and emergency management
- Integration of Indigenous traditional knowledge with modern science for prevention and response
Core Components:
- Fleet: Up to 50 wildland fire engines, Type 3/4/6 apparatus, and support vehicles optimized for WUI operations (rough terrain, quick deployment, high-volume water delivery).
- Structure Protection: 10 portable sprinkler trailers designed for rapid setup around homes, critical infrastructure, and community assets.
- Personnel: Capacity to field up to 200 firefighters, including seasonal surge staffing. Emphasis on training and employing Indigenous firefighters.
- Logistics Backbone: Mobile base camps (sleeping, feeding, sanitation for 200+ personnel), fuel tankers and resupply systems, mobile command posts with communications and incident management technology.
- ESS Support: Doubling on the logistics backbone, there is an opportunity to create mobile base camps to act as ESS support for evacuees, allowing communities to stay together rather than being dispursed throughout numerous cities and towns. By utilizing Z-bunk commercial trailers, the ESS support could be established at existing campgrounds, or community centres to provide evacuee housing.
