Raising $75,000 to purchase new equipment and add crew members

J&H Directional Drilling LLC

My business is a directional drilling company. Directional drilling is the practice of accessing underground by drilling in a non-vertical direction. My company installs fiber for internet and phone. Most local authorities and customers prefer their services, including fiber cables, to be installed underground. Buried fiber deployments are immune to wind and ice damage as they are buried below the layer where the soil freezes. Outdoor cable may be direct buried, pulled or blown into conduit or innerduct, or installed aerially between poles.  A direct burial installation involves heavy machinery like our excavator and places the optical cable underground in direct contact with the earth and rocks that make up the surrounding soil.  On average, installation of a fiber drop cable from a “drop” point to the home takes 1 to 5 working days, depending on whether the fiber needs to be buried underground or run aerially on overhead lines. Additionally, the current generation of underground systems requires less maintenance, and refurbishment is only required every 40 or 50 years, which is the specified lifespan of a transmission line. Underground cables are better protected against extreme weather and other catastrophic events than overhead lines.

My Team

On my team, I have a crew that consist of three members. Will in hopingly be able to add more members and more crews as we grow.  The locater, It allows the operator to see the drill's location and orientation to know if things are going according to the bore plan. The operator can use the display to make adjustments to the drill head's pitch, direction, and depth to correct any drift from the planned path.  A locating system is a serious investment, but one pays off through improved efficiency and targeting on a job. Being able to guide and position the drill head allows your drill operator to keep the hole running along your planned bore path to keep a project moving. It sends the information through the ground to the surface, where this type of locator picks it up. The receiver is manually positioned over the sonde to decode the signal and send steering directions to the drill operator.

As I stated befor, we have a directional drill operator.  Directional boring, sometimes called trenchless digging, is accomplished by piercing the ground with a drilling bit/head at a low angle. The bit is spun and pushed through the soil. Rods are contiguously added to increase the reach.  Comprised of dozens of steel blades that chip away at the soil ahead as it rotates, the cutter-head which uses disc cutters, sits at the very front of the TBM, does most of the hard work by spinning and digging away at the earth to allow the machine to move forward.  Once the desired depth has been met the drilling tip levels out to maintain a horizontal bore. When the boring reaches its destination, a pipe, line, or conduit is pulled back through the hole. All of this is controlled by hydraulic joy sticks.  The driller pays close attention to the locate operator to see his hand signals for which way he needs to turn, move the drill head up/down, or wheather to drill or pull back.  We use hand signals and keep walkie talkies on us at all times for safety measures incase one needs more understandable direction.

Last of the crew members would be the shovel hand/laborer or known as hand excavation is exactly what it sounds like: backbreaking labor accompanied by a shovel. Hand excavation during the planning process for a trenchless operation is called “potholing.” Potholing allows the geotechnical team to visually assess subsurface conditions presented within a pit excavated for this purpose. Hand excavation is also used when the use of digging equipment would cause unacceptable damage to the surrounding structures or land, or the work, if done by mechanical digging equipment – such as a backhoe – would present the possibility of the collapse. Hand excavation is also known as manual excavation.

The biggest issue we are having is working capital to float payroll while waiting on contracts to pay out as the bigger and better contacts pay ninety days out as we have to front all expenses and payroll during that time period. The competition in this industry is high, but we have been very fortunate to be a very well known company as we have been extremely successful.

My vision is I want to grow.  This industry has been so amazing to me.  The people, companies, and even competitors have became supportive of my small empire.  Which is extremely   challenging but also rewarding.  The global horizontal directional drilling market was valued at $ 9.0 Billion in 2022.

To achieve my vision for this company is to create job opportunities.  I want to open a new world of work for individuals. I would love to be able to inspire small businesses  that started just like me to achieve goals as I am hoping to achieve now.  I want to be able to enforce and  encourage more safety measures for the drilling world to keep all employees.  I have intentions on buying new equipment, have enough salary to hire more crew members to my team, and be able to build this business into what I know it deserves.  This company has been going strong for three years now.  Its time to upgrade and show the world what J&H Directional Drilling LLC can do for the people of our country, and also help the environment  stay safe while drilling in it's soils.
