2020 was a challenging year for Theatrical Exhibition. Most of the major markets were forced to close their doors due to the pandemic. Los Angeles, a city known for the entertainment industry, didn't reopen its theaters until March of 2021. When theaters did reopen, the entire landscape of the theatrical market changed, with key venues shuttering their doors for good. The cinemas that remained were massive, corporate, Walmart-esque/carbon copy movie theaters - venues built for large capacity audiences but with little to no curated experiences for movie goers.
Hamilton Neighborhood Cinemas, founded by Justin Hamilton, will be built for people who love movies, providing the charming atmosphere of old-school family-owned neighborhood theaters but with an elevated and luxurious experience for the audience.
Hamilton Neighborhood Cinemas (HNC) will start with one venue, then will open and/or acquire 3-5 screen venues across Los Angeles in burgeoning neighborhoods like Atwater Village, Los Feliz, West Hollywood, Highland Park, Silver Lake, and similar areas. These neighborhoods are areas that are either short-screened or only have large Corporate locations. Over the next 5+ years, Hamilton Neighborhood Cinemas plans to expand to at least five venues across Los Angeles County. Each venue would add $500k-$2M in revenue per year. Within a decade, HNC plans to have a circuit of small venues along the West Coast in cities like San Francisco, Portland, Seattle, and San Diego.
Hamilton Neighborhood Cinemas will give audiences a first-class experience. All screens will feature the most updated technology in projection presentation and audio. HNC will have a beer and wine license as well as a food menu with movie-goer favorites like popcorn, candy and concessions, but will also feature more niche Angeleno favorites like tacos, chicken sandwiches, and gourmet burgers. HNC will not only prioritize first-run films, but will also schedule classic repertory cinema favorites to fill in the schedule.
Ownership Experience and training: Justin started in movie theaters when he was 16. From 2005-2012, he was an Associate Manager for a 5-screen Regal Theatre in Staten Island, New York. After moving to Los Angeles in 2012, he started working for ArcLight Cinemas/Pacific Theatres in the renowned Hollywood Dome location. Over the course of 4 years, Justin did everything from supervising the world-famous ArcLight Hollywood Dome, managing the Event Business, coordinating trailers, and programming repertory.
In 2016, Justin started his journey in Theatrical Distribution for Relativity Europacorp. From 2017-2022, he worked for STX Entertainment as Manager, and eventually Director of Theatrical Distribution. He has taken part in the distribution of over 30 films during his 5+ year distribution career and his 16 year career in exhibition opened over 1000 films.
Pricing Strategy
The Company will make use of a promotional pricing strategy.
Other pricing information: Over the years studios and exhibitors have talked about Variable Pricing, but everyone seems to have a different idea of what that means. Hamilton Neighborhood Cinemas will use Variable Pricing throughout the week. It is well known that Friday/Saturday at 7pm (PRIME) is the busiest time period for movie going. HNC will incentivize guests to come to the movies at times outside of the Prime showtime sets.
Day to Day Operations
All of our venues will be renovated with windows to the street so we can serve coffee and Food to customers who do not come see movies (this will also allow us to take orders from the many delivery services). This window will open 7am everyday.
On weekends, holidays, and during the Summer shows will start before noon. Thursdays, Friday, and Saturday will have shows going to Midnight.
I will work with an assistant every Monday to book films for our venues and work with managers at the sites to make the movie schedules. Tuesday will be about Staff scheduling at all venues as well as Marketing for the weekend. Wednesday will be about inventory. Thursday will be about setting up for the weekend of films.
Staffing
Each site will need a staff of 6 managers and several staff members depending on the year.
Each Manager will have different responsibilities including Film Scheduling, Marketing, Book keeping, Technology, inventory, Food & Beverage.
We will need Projectionists, Ushers, Concession workers, Baristas, and kitchen workers.
