Coffee Love & Peace

The Business

Coffee Love & Peace has selected the sole proprietorship as its legal entity. This structure was chosen because of its operational simplicity. Although the structure exposes the owner to unlimited liability, risk management and insurance protection will be established to offset this risk.

Coffee Love & Peace will be an independent, start-up venture. The proposed starting date for the venture will be 11/01/2020.  This business plan documents the precise strategies and activities that will be taken in order to commence operations of business.

Coffee Love & Peace will be a mobile food unit. The unit is a 1965 Little Gem camper trailer that is 7’x8’ in dimension. The camper needs some remodeling done to bring it to code for the Minnesota Department of Health. New FRP ceiling, FRP walls, and vinyl flooring will be used for remodeling. Some cabinets and cabinet tops will get to be fabricated as well.  With materials on sale and no cost labor, the cost to renovate will be $1,000.

The camper will be equipped with a commercial under counter refrigerator, commercial espresso machine, commercial grade grinder, and a commercial drip coffee maker (Keurig). A 3 compartment sink and handwashing sink will need to be installed as well. A generator will be used to run the electric in the camper. With bargain (but quality) equipment, the cost will be $10,000. Other start up expenses will be POS, cups, lids, straws, marketing, insurance, generator, propane tanks, signage, paint job, and other miscellaneous items. With equipment and other startup costs, the cost will be $14,000.

Coffee Love & Peace will serve a basic menu of coffee based beverages. The most common item will be a homemade recipe of cold brew or iced coffee that will be mixed with heavy cream and the customer’s choice of sugar free syrup flavor. There will be one option for non-dairy, soy milk.  Mochas and lattes will be served as well. There will be a test market for blended drinks for next summer. There will be a variety of premade scones or muffins available for sale.

Ceres Parsons will be the head barista with help from her husband, John Schweitzer when needed. There may come a time to hire one person to run the business for times of vacation or time needed off.

The Industry

Coffee is awesome! And not in the “I love coffee” sense. According to myfriendscoffee.com, in 2019, 64% of American’s aged 18 and over drank coffee every day. (NCA) The USA ranks 11th among the countries with the highest caffeine consumption, with a rate of 200 mg per person per day. (Caffeine Informer). The average US coffee drinker consumes 2.7 cups per day, with the average size of a coffee cup measuring 9 ounces. (The Motley Fool). More than 150 million Americans drink about 400 million cups of coffee per day or more than 40 billion cups per year. (The Motley Fool). Coffee is a daily habit, not like other foods. As much as the family dinners on Sundays are awesome, they’re typically only a Sunday in my life. Think about it, the person reading this is probably having a cup of coffee right now. So not only is it in demand, it’s in demand every single day in our lives. In the Minneapolis area, there are 4 other mobile coffee units that do not operate on a daily basis. They operate for special events or show up at different locations every now and then. Coffee Love and Peace will make an impression on the people of Minneapolis. They will see the camper on many different corners or parking lots at an array of time frames.

Objective, Goals, and Strategies

Coffee Love and Peace will offer a fresh point of view on many places in Minneapolis. The choices of syrups will change daily or weekly while keeping favorites on the menu. The service will be awesome and the coffee will be the best the customer has ever tasted.

There are three influential key success factors and activities that will contribute to the accomplishments of Coffee Love and Peace’s goals. These factors include: our ability to select the best location(s) to vend our coffee, keeping variable costs as low as possible, and building high market visibility through brand building and advertising.

Coffee Love and Peace will present an image of love and peace through our product in a clean and attractive atmosphere. With the vintage era camper that will be used, an old fashion looking flooring will be used with an easy look of white walls with some vintage era, tie died decorations for the interior of the camper. The paint job of the camper will be done in a tie dye fashion as well with a peace sign.

Target Market

Coffee Love and Peace will plan to vend near downtown Minneapolis for workers to stop by before heading into their respective places of business. We plan to vend as early as 7am, Monday through Friday in the downtown vicinity. Once the morning rush as come through, the vending will continue to another predetermined area of Minneapolis. With the approval of other cities in the Minneapolis area, vending will occur in other areas. Coffee Love and Peace plan to vend at flea markets and other events. We also plan to vend at the University of Minnesota on some days of the week. Our main location is just blocks from the campus and we feel that we would be very successful.
