Brooklyn Birthing Center (BBC) is a Freestanding facility that provides health services to expectant mothers before, during, and after birth through a midwifery and wellness model. Birthing mothers anticipating a low-risk pregnancy and delivery can give birth in the center instead of the hospital. The number of freestanding birth centers has increased across the country as the concept of out-of-hospital births has gained popularity in the last few decades due to more studies that have come out of experiences in
other countries and the US showing that birthing mothers with low-risk pregnancies who had delivered at birth centers have the same or better outcome that the ones who delivered in the hospital. In New York State, there are only four(4) licensed Freestanding Birth Centers (FSBC), one in Buffalo, one in Rockland county, and two in Brooklyn.
Most of our patients come to us because of a poor prior experience or poor outcome in the hospital. Patients who seek us are looking to experience natural birth in a safe, homelike setting without unnecessary intervention. They all want to participate in decision-making related to their health and that of their offspring. They want to be sure they are receiving equitable care and are empowered to overcome debilitating health disparities. Our birth center provides a welcoming place for safe, equitable, culturally competent, and affordable care. Fifty-six percent (56%0 of our patients are Black or Latinx, the group who has three times more risk of dying during their pregnancy and childbirth than their white counterparts
We have not spent any money on marketing. Our patients come to us through recommendations from our patients, recommendations from doulas, and social media reviews Our team consists of certified nurse midwives, registered Nurses with Labor and Delivery and experienced experience, lactation consultants We have a written transfer agreement with Maimonides Hospital and Mount Sinai West.
We have contracts from different commercial and Medicaid Managed Care plans. We are renegotiating rates with 3 other plans.
We received requests from a few entities regarding the possibility of partnerships.
The funding request is to be used to build a new and larger facility in Brooklyn

My partner is Dr. James Ducey, an Obstetrician/Gynecologist with a subspecialty in Maternal/Fetal Medicine.
