Looking to start my dream job of having a Catering / Food truck or food trailer. I am asking for the $75,000 investment to purchase the food trailer and have extra funds to purchase anything the truck doesn’t have such as indoor smokers. I have seen the price of a truck vs. a trailer and despite both being out of my price range on my own a truck is way out of my range as it’s seen some loaded ready to go close to $100k. I recently saw a fully loaded (except for a smoker) food trailer normally priced around $60k. Grant it a small brick and mortar location would be ideal but for now with having a full time job I don’t have the time to devote to a full fledge day to day turnkey building. Doing events and setting up on weekends is right for me for now.
I’ve worked since the day I was old enough too. Sometimes working multiple jobs to pay bills and help my family pay bills.
I remember when I was maybe 11 hearing my parents talking about how to find money to pay bills so I gave them my plastic dukes of hazard general Lee piggy bank to help them pay bills.
All my life having some sort of food business to offer my community has been the dream that has never financially been able to come happen. Everyone (customers/friends/ & family) that has had my food tells me over and over again I need to leave my current job and open a food service business. Whether it’s a small shop or a food truck. I have been cooking for as long as I can remember. It was just my mom and me until I was about 10yrs old. She worked multiple jobs to keep a roof over our head and food on the table. I had to learn to cook for myself since she was always working. I remember standing on step stools to be tall enough to look into pots and pans and watch what I was cooking. My first job was in a restaurant where I was hired as a dishwasher but the owner saw my passion for cooking. As soon as I turned 16 he let me start running the kitchen not just being a helper. Due to getting older and bills that came with adulthood working multiple jobs I had to leave the restaurant world to do something making more money. I got into the electrical sales trade selling to contractors. After 30yrs in electrical sales I have worked my way up from the bottom putting stock away in the warehouse to being the manager of one of our smallest locations. But cooking is still my passion. My wife constantly tells me she is going to enter me into one of the reality tv cooking shows. Whenever I see the former restaurant owner I worked for he will always ask if I am happy where I was. Are they taking care of me. And telling me I can come back whenever I wanted to, the door is always open for me. When I was in my 11th grade school year we did SAT’s. I received a scholarship offer from a cooking school in Hyde Park NY but I was never great at math taking basic math until graduation so I believe my PSAT math scores is why I never heard back when I applied for the scholarship.
As I said I have cooked or been the cook for every occasion or family function for as long as I can remember. My in-law family (full blooded italian family) has classified me as the family chef. I am always helping or being asked to come help my mother in law in the kitchen. A few years ago as we were cooking Christmas morning breakfast she told me she enjoys cooking with me because I show her new tricks that her mother never taught her growing up in Italy. About 7yrs ago my wife bought me an electric smoker and I have loved it. I smoked a brisket for customer one year at a Christmas party luncheon. It was a huge hit. Ever since then I am asked every year if im making brisket. I’ve had customer ask me to smoke them briskets on a weekend. In 2023 a customer asked me to cater a bbq party for him consisting of smoked brisket/smoked pulled pork/ and a side. This was my first experience cooking on my own to make money. Since then I have been asked by a few more people to smoke meat for them which in turn has given me the big to want to do this for a side business to eventually turn into my steady income. I dream of having a food truck or trailer to be able to offer food on evenings / weekends / and different events in town where we live. I have even recently entered into my first BBQ competition in August based on people who have had my cooking telling me that I needed to enter the competition.
