We are a nonprofit supporting an indigenous people from Atux̂ (Attu, Alaska). Issues range from human rights, repatriation, social justice, cultural and healing practices. We are a group of people seeking to be able to travel to our homeland. Since WWII we were not allowed to return home and being able to bring our people home on a regular basis is the main goal of our nonprofit. We were prisoners held in Japan during WWII and when the US Government brought us home, they did not allow us to return home. As a result, Attuans are displaced and do not have a connection to their culture and their home. We were displaced by the US Government and are now an unrecognized federal tribe limiting our abilities to obtain federal grants.
Another issue we are working on is repatriation of remains that were stolen off of the island. There are many more social justice and cultural projects on our list. We hope to obtain enough funds for 3 employees as well as having an office space to reach our important goals. Thank you for your consideration. Qakaasakung, Helena Schmitz
