I am a Nurse educator who empowers my students, patients, and others around me with medical knowledge to advocate for themself, take the driver's seat of their healthcare needs, and how effectively and therapeutically manage their health based on thoer lived experience, diagnosis, and ethnic, race and family history predisposition by taking time to explain and teach in a language they understand.
Throughout my nursing career, I have taken pride in pioneering and spearheading initiatives to bridge the gap and healthcare disparities among minority and economically disadvantaged communities. These efforts lead to improved health outcomes for patients otherwise written off as non-compliant when understanding was lacking.
Unfortunately the disparities in healthcare span the globe and have taken on a pandemic level of need especially where immigration is present. The objective is to lead the change by serving the community this need presents itself through education, training, and empowering community members to work as advocates with support like medical office escorts to explain doctors' recommendations, assisting with shopping for label reading and better food choices where available and coordinating community-based care like appointment setting.
Another focus is collaborating with Health care providers and colleagues to help support the community members and where needed provide culturally sensitive education to check the unknown as that can result in under-treatment of patients.
Training and supporting community members and leaders like church ministers and Imam to educate the congregation on the resources available and also the importance of following treatment recommendations and working with Pharmaceutical participating in clinical trials that are transparent, forthright, and ethical for a better including and representation of approved therapies on the market which will reduce the incident of polypharmacy due to trial and failed therapies.
