We are currently overpaying for a medicine that was invented in 1921 after the patent for that medicine was sold for two Canadian dollars. When we unnecessarily divert significant sums of money away from innovative products, worse health outcomes are a matter of course. AB4AD INC is making affordability better for all diabetics who need insulin. A few concessions have been made, notably on the slow-acting Lantus by Sanofi, however fast-acting formulations remain expensive. Although the Inflation Reduction Act has made important progress in increasing access for diabetic patients who need insulin, as a nation we are still significantly overpaying for an essential medicine.
I have a direct line to Civica Rx, the company working on the CalRx Biosimilar Insulin Initiative. Civica has agreed to sell my novel, patented, fast-acting insulin if I can get it through the FDA approval process. I will be using the funds from this round to take the insulin molecule I have patented through the preclinical process with my academic partners from Texas. Then we will apply for IND status and, if possible, begin an early Phase I study. If enough funding is secured in this round, we may also be able to go into a Phase II study. Currently, my team has confirmed that this new insulin works as expected with fat cells in a petri dish. They are prepared to take on next steps once funding is secured. Those next steps are first to establish a small to mid-scale process that could provide enough insulin for both animal and human trials. Then we would perform animal testing.
A major hurdle for most companies undertaking the current insulin manufacturing process is that they have to invest hundreds of millions to get to the economy of scale where they can compete on price. With a radically simplified manufacturing process using a novel yeast platform, we can essentially "brew" the insulin in a similar fashion to beer and directly extract the fully folded product from the media. This means that we should be able to compete on price without as much investment in scale.
I also have a concept company for Synthetic Plasma Products to try to cure previously incurable diseases such as multiple sclerosis.
