Making a film from a Book

We are producing a book-to-film adaptation of the book “Cornbread in Buttermilk” by the Buntyn Family. I am Pastor Paul Buntyn, the grandson of Emma Lee Buntyn, the matriarch of six siblings who jointly wrote Cornbread in Buttermilk.

I am writing with interest, hoping to turn this biography of our late grandmother, Emma Lee “Pappie” Buntyn, into a film. I believe adapting Cornbread in Buttermilk into a film will give us an amazing opportunity to not only remember, testify, and honor Pappie’s sacrifice and unique way of showing her love, but also initiate a conversation with our audiences about Black culture and identity, especially in the 1960s and especially in Harlem.

I think Cornbread in Buttermilk gives us a very unique opportunity to address that. With this story, we don’t have to hide authenticity behind humor, or market to mass appeal with suffering. Instead, we will be able to feed audiences exactly what they are looking for: authenticity.

Our company seeks to actively engage in telling stories that impact everyday life while also challenging stereotypes. Authenticity is in high demand, and we have the opportunity to deliver. This is a true account of a tremendous sacrifice made by an individual who surrendered her life’s dream to build a strong foundation in children that were not her own during a time in America when it was not popular to be a Black American. It is the impetus for the success they are experiencing today.
