The Electrics (Motorcycles) Are Coming!
(Actually, they have been here for years)
Electric motorcycles have been with us for many years. But, they never were a mainstream item. Until now. There has been an awakening in the marketplace with the announcement by Harley of a fully electric Harley motorcycle. Harley? Electric? Yes. At $30,000 the bike, called the LiveWire™, is a little pricey for the general market. And the specifications are not all that impressive. No top speed is listed and the maximum mileage on a charge is only 146 miles. And there are conditions set on that. Under normal riding you can expect to get about 100 miles before you need to recharge. Minimum recharge time for a full charge using a fast charging station is 1 hour. If you use the built in charger at home it can take many times that.
By comparison Zero has been in the market for over 13 years. With their ups and downs they have survived the market and now offer a number of models to choose from. With a high end price of $21,000 they come in below the Harley. And they offer better range at just over 200 miles on a charge. They also publish their top speed at 124 MPH. While not a scorcher, it is enough to keep up with all legal traffic conditions. Battery charging time is on par with the Harley at 1 hour for a full charge on a fast charging station. But note the charge gives you twice the mileage of the Harley for the same charging time.
There have been other domestic electric motorcycle companies over the years. But they were not able to penetrate the market enough to survive. Some new companies are currently entering the market. We will wait to see how they do in the future.
But now enter the Chinese electric motorcycles and mopeds. The domestic Chinese (Asian) and European electric motorcycle market has been extremely active for many years. The first Chinese electrics were not all that great. Limited range, 20 to 40 miles, because they only had gelcell batteries. Long recharge times at 5 to 8 hours. Limited power, nothing over 2KW wheel motors (mostly 500w and 750w). And very cheap construction since they were built from the same components used on the typical mass produced 50cc to 250cc gas mopeds and motorcycles. As a result, they never had any noticeable penetration of the American market.
Now, however, the market has changed. The Chinese manufacturers have upgraded their products with better materials, better and larger batteries (lithium), better and larger wheel motors (up to 20KW) and better styling. Speeds up to 120MPH and ranges up to 150 miles on a charge are now available. The one current weak spot is the lack of a high speed charging port. Full charging time for most of the current products is 2 to 3 hours with a standard 110v charger. It should be noted that charging time is dependent on miles driven. If you have only driven a short distance then charging time will be considerably less than recharging a completely depleted battery. Depending on the chargers (10ah to 30ah rates) that come with the product, it takes about 1 to 3 minutes recharging time for each mile driven.
A startup importing operation in Las Vegas is attempting to penetrate the American domestic market . Skeuter® USA is importing a self branded line of electric motorcycles and mopeds. Skeuter® brand products are made by a Chinese company with a large selection of motorcycles and mopeds. With over 20 models to choose from there is a product for almost every ones taste.
Model specifications range from 1.5kw mopeds to 8kw motorcycles. Ranges start at 50 miles and go up to 150 miles on a charge. All units share certain basic configuration standards. All models use 72V, 3 phase, brushless DC motors. All use a lithium battery power pack (50ah to 100ah). The specific size of the motor and amp hours of the battery varies with the model selected.
Prices range from $2100 (moped) to $7800 (motorcycle). The top end motorcycles are competition for the Harley and Zero products. The quality is good and the ride is solid. If you are looking for reasonably priced transportation these units are a good choice.
