Stigma is described as “an attribute that is deeply discrediting, that reduces the bearer from a whole person to a tainted, discounted one”.

Stigma is constructed by a variety of psychological and societal factors, and “…exists when elements of labelling, stereotyping, separating, status loss and discrimination co-occur in a power situation that allows the process to unfold”.

HIV associated stigma is closely related to societal power structures, legal frameworks, and intersecting prejudices experienced by many of the sub-populations disproportionally affected by HIV.

People living with HIV often encounter intersectional stigmas, i.e. the convergence of multiple stigmatized identities due to intersecting prejudices related to affiliations to marginalized groups such as ethnic identity, sexual orientation, gender, or moralizing societal views attributed to certain characters  

While sexually transmitted disease (STDs) affects individuals of all ages, STDs take a particularly heavy toll on young people. CDC estimates that youth ages 15-24 account for almost half of the 26 million new sexually transmitted infections that occurs in the United States in 2018.

Global trend in HIV infection demonstrates an overall increase in HIV prevalence and substantial declines in AIDs related Deaths largely attributable to the antiretroviral treatment. Sub-Saharan Africa carries a disproportionate burden of HIV, accounting for more than 70% of Global burden of infection.

Travelers contribute to the spread of HIV-1 genetic diversity worldwide.  Ethnic Identity plays a big role in missing appointment for treatment or care.  Internalized stigma can lead to depression, isolation, and feelings of shame, and can affect individuals’ ability to stay adherent to their HIV medication. Our staffs are trained about words that have negative meanings for people at risk for or living with HIV and which are empowering, and we know how to talk about HIV in a way that is not stigmatizing.
