LAVILU BIO
(Pronounced La-V-Lou)
LAVILU is a clothing brand and store that opened in May of this year by Stephanie White and Jazmin Delgado. The two minority businessowners launched this men’s upscale leisure clothing line with the premise of producing fashion for a male client that appreciates quality, is fashion-forward and wants clothes that have an understated elegance. The brick-and-mortar store located in Harlem, is a dream long realized by the two new entrepreneurs.
And in the spirit of true fashion entrepreneurship, this creative partnership starts and ends with family.
Stephanie White is Jazmin Delgado’s godmother. Fashion has always been something they had in common. Stephanie remembers “You can’t be a child of two tailors and not have an interest in clothes. Having a career in retail was my original career goal, but I took a different path that led me to The Board of Education and then to Harlem Hospital, where I served the community for 20 years as a telecommunications operator. However, in all that time, I never lost sight or hope about establishing a fashion brand in Harlem. Once we decided to open the business, Jazmin and I hit the pavement. We were quickly saddened by the sight of seeing so many familiar business spaces that were closed/for rent because of the global pandemic. But we kept the faith. We knew where we wanted to be. And after many calls (and several unreturned calls), we were blessed to find the perfect location for the store.
Jazmin Delgado’s affinity for fashion started at a young age as well. She always admired fashion it led her to employment with several high-end retail businesses where she cultivated her skills as a designer, visual consultant, and successful brand builder. Jazmin reflects “Fashion for me is as natural to me as breathing. And it has always been my heart’s desire to open a store, specifically a men’s store in Harlem. Stephanie and I knew this would be a huge undertaking and a giant leap of faith to open a business at a time when many businesses in our community were either going out of business or finding it hard to stay open, but we refused to give up. In my role as creative director for LAVILU, I have made it my responsibility and heartfelt purpose to articulate and develop fashionable quality pieces for our male (and sometimes female) clientele that also speak to the community dynamic. And why menswear? Jazmin remarks “I actually wear more men’s clothes. Laughs Stephanie “We actually both do.”
The LAVILU men’s clothing line which is growing by leaps and bounds currently features leisurewear that can be dressed up or down and funky sweatshirts (which women are grabbing off the shelves and customizing as dresses), along with small-to-medium sized accessories, is attracting customers of all ages. Say’s Jazmin “Our client is ageless and its someone that isn’t interested in tags or names on their clothes. It’s a European chic aesthetic. The pieces are manufactured in a few sizes only which give it more of a custom vibe and there are no restocks on sizes.” Adds Stephanie “LAVILU is an expanding lifestyle brand. We are growing this business into a one stop shop where men can purchase head-to-toe quality clothing.”
