INTRODUCTION
Kuando Mines and Minerals Limited is a Zambian company registered and incorporated on 1st February 2008 in Zambia, which focuses on mining and mineral processing. The company now plans to open up a gold open pit mine in Rufunsa district of Lusaka province.
The entire project site within which the proposed gold mining activities will take place is 5181.68 hectares in size. The site is located approximately 22 km off the Great East Road, at Lukwipa area, and about 37 km southeast of Rufunsa CBD. The project site is under Chief Mumpashya of Rufunsa district.
The entire proposed mining site covers a total area of 5181.68 hectares. The project involves the setting up of workers shelter, sanitation facilities, clearing of vegetation on pit area (this will be done in phases i.e. a small area cleared at a time) movement of mining equipment to site and the actual extraction of gold.
Historical Background
Exploration rights of the area were previously held by companies known as Zamgold and Mukumbe which are currently not operating in Zambia.
In the same area, the Chakwenga prospect (AGIP (Z) Ltd, 1994) was the subject of limited primary development to a depth of 95m below surface and a resource of 20,000t at between 5.6g/t and 7g/t gold estimated. The mineralization occurs as pyritic quartz veinlets, a few centimetres to decimetres in width, parallel to a north-trending foliation in silicified micaceous schists. Gold is also found as elongated pipe-like shoots paralleling the regional lineation.
To the east of the project area, around Nkaseka Hill and Yala Hill, a considerable number of vein-type occurrences are hosted by Muva-age biotite gneiss, biotite-garnet-muscovite gneiss, quartzite and ironstone, and occasionally by granite and aplite. The quartz veins are generally slightly discordant to the foliation in ENE-striking shear zones. Commonly they are 0.5-2m in width and variously contain iron oxides and some sulphide minerals. There are reports of gold production in the area ranging from 1 to 80 grams per tonne.
Estimated Gold reserve on licence No.20230HQ-LML
The licence area has economic gold deposit. This is based on the results of both geochemistry and geophysics. This is both alluvial and lode type gold deposit. It is estimated that the licence can produce up to 10Kg of gold per month. It should be noted however that the estimation is extremely conservative is based on limited exploration done in the area.
