I'm a stone mason/licensed contractor. I am going to begin a 2 man operation producing and delivering marble for landscape and masonry applications from Jones Marble Quarry located in southern Oregon. In order to finance what I'm wanting to do I'm selling 1/3 interest in the quarry and business for the price of $200,000.
What prompted me to acquire the quarry in 2017 is I was constantly having trouble finding the large high quality stone I wanted for the work I planned to do. I build water features, stairs, monuments and high-end landscapes using large stone fitted together. The marble is the premiere stone for this type of applications especially because it lends itself to interior applications such as artistic seating for airports, casinos, colleges, and all public gathering areas of all kinds which is work I aspire to do. It's fun to create and sells for high prices typically with 100% profit margins. Because marble is white and semi translucent, it stays cooler in the heat.
The quarry: The stone outcrops and is at the surface so soil/reclamation is not an issue. The 100 + years of on and off mining has been concentrated in the lower portion of the quarry leaving the majority of the 5 million ton marble deposit untouched. The stone being quarried will be fractured rather than wire sawn initially. The quarry has no neighbors, good access roads and minimal preparation needed prior to producing a sellable product. Plus what is unique about marble and the products that I am focused on is that all the stone mined becomes a product - no tailing piles. The least expensive crushed rock sells for $85 per ton. So high value allows for smaller volumes necessary for sustainability. Marble always has value and marble quarries typically serve multi generations because of the stability aspect of a marble operation especially when offering an unsophisticated finished product.
Another aspect worth consideration is the increased value of the quarry brought about by use of the quarry. Carbonate stone as a rule of thumb is worth approximately $.50 per ton in place. JMQ will appraise for something like of $2.5 million as an operational quarry.
