Looking for monies for a food desert grocery store in Howard County Indiana. This will be a start up. The area is low income and elderly. The idea is to purchase a building with has 1.93 acres of land attached and place a grocery store there. The nearest grocery is 1.5 miles from the nearest Safe a Lot and 5.6 miles from the nearest Kroger. There is no mass transportation, only a trolley car or taxi service. Within the land, I thought about teaching the children in the neighborhood to plant the vegetables that we can sell in the store and of course hire them to work there. I also want to have the college students at the local Ivy Tech school do the rehab of the building.
The city has just built a 80 room drug rehab space 2 block away. There are 4 apartment complexes that are for senior citizens within a 4 block radius, also within 600 feet of the proposed site is a low income housing and another 3 blocks over. and a community center across the street. This grocery is within the neighborhood that need it. This is located in a food desert. The neighborhood is starting to be revitalize. The city has built houses on vacant lots and there is a plan to renovate the community center. I am requesting 400,000 dollars for this project.
The five larges groups in the city are white, Blacks consist of 9.51 % and Hispanic population is at 3.8%. Unemployment rate is at 9%... even though there are manufacturing jobs there.
I was born and raised in this community and I have always wanted to do right by it. My company JBN Securities is a Security Company that does Domestic Violence , Women Safety , What to do when the Police stop you Scenarios... I have been in business since 2007 and most of my work i do free of charge. I have been a Police officer since 1983.
I know this is way out of my lane, but this city needs this more than ever...
In Indianapolis, In Indy Fresh Market has just been given a 14,000 square foot building and funds for a facility in the northeast corridor of the city. I live in Indianapolis, 45 minutes from Kokomo, and its the perfect model that i am wanting to mock....thank you for your consideration in this matter.... I am an African American female and i have contacted an African American farmer, that will assist me with the plantings, cultivation of the land and produce if we need it. I plan to hire an on site butcher and hold healthy eating and living ideas to the neighborhood. Anything to do a great deed and play everything forward. the building and land is located at 804 N Locke street Kokomo In. They are asking 74,000 dollars for the building. I am getting the building inspected next week. If the building is not feasible, then plan B is to tear it down an place a pole barn in its place. Thank You For your time and consideration with this much needed project--- Donna Hayes
