Ecocon.ca EcoCon Building Technologies is an Alberta corporation focused on the next generation of buildings as well as the technologies used to construct and operate them. It’s a Buildings 2.0 vision that at its core supports a global mandate of high resource efficiency, low energy/emission, smart, connected buildings with an extended asset life. A key guiding principle of the vision is the firm belief that every human deserves safe, secure, affordable housing. We believe it is one of the most important issues to solve at both local and global levels.

As a part of the company’s strategy, EcoCon has teamed up with Aircrete Europe to introduce a proven, rapidly-scalable building product called AAC to the Canadian market. AAC is short for Autoclaved Aerated Concrete. It’s a lightweight masonry unit with superior properties over conventional wood-framed and concrete buildings. AAC is used extensively in Europe and Asia with approximately 2000 operating facilities globally. A Canadian flag-ship facility is in the works which when operational will produce the equivalent of greater than 1500 housing units per year. We are currently planning for operations of the facility to begin somewhere within Q2 and Q3 2023. In the meantime, we have import agreements with similar facilities in the South East USA and Mexico.

Early on we recognized that for industry adoption of new building products and technologies training/upskilling the construction workforce is critical, so to begin solving this EcoCon has partnered with Portage College to develop a training program. In March 2021 the government of Alberta provided funding to support the development and piloting of a 4 part AAC micro credential. The program is currently in development with Portage. As I mentioned, the first pilot is scheduled to be offered in September. When I have more specifics I’ll pass them on.
